Surfing and bodyboarding
Being just 5 minutes walk from the closest surfing beach, (Praia das Maçãs) the cottages make a great base for a surf trip.
There are two excellent breaks within walking distance of the cottages which are listed in the bible of surfing destinations, The Storm Riders Guide. This book describes the breaks of Praia Grande/Praia Pequena as “The most consistent spot in the Lisbon area, and one of the few places protected from summer north winds, this has powerful waves and an infamous shore break. Praia Pequena is the the northern continuation of the same beach with similar characteristics but not so many crowds. The water is some of the cleanest on this part of the coast.”
The classic Ericeira area which has 13 breaks including the legendary spot of Coxos, is 30 mins away by car.
Surfing and bodyboarding school
There is a local surfing school called
just a couple of streets away from the cottages, which we thoughroughly recommend. They cater for every ability in surfing and boadboarding, being able to tailor make packages to suit anyone, at every level, from beginners to semi-professionals.
They run great introduction to surfing or bodyboarding lessons aimed at children every morning or afternoon, which cover not just board riding but safety, board control and knowledge of the waves, tides and currents.
All equipment such as wetsuits, boards and life jackets for children under 7 is included in the price and all of their instructors are fully qualified under the Portuguese surfing federation and speak fluent English.
